St Bartholomew's Church, Sydenham

This year Ash Wednesday falls on 25th February. At 8pm that evening, we plan a Sung Eucharist including the traditional ceremony of imposition of ashes*. During the following 40 days of Lent our extra activities will include a study group shared with other churches and lunches to raise money for charity after selected Sunday services. * Marking of crosses on foreheads with ash. These ashes are an ancient biblical symbol of repentance and a reminder of our mortality. They are made from the palm leaves used in the Palm Sunday procession the previous Easter.
